Pastor/Moderator James G. Bell called the meeting to order with prayer. He then led devotions and asked for prayers and concerns.

Roll Call: All present.

Composition of Session—Year 2004

Examining and Accepting New Member: After the constitutional questions were read and affirmatively answered, Pastor Bell presented Rod Custer for membership. He was unanimously accepted by the session. Rod comes by letter of transfer from the Mennonite Church of Normal.

Pastor's Report: Jim will be ordaining and installing Margaret Wolf. Communion will be on February 1. Please remember your assignments. He has accepted a Presbyterian assignment, Regional Committee on Ministry. This involves working with five churches. Joan Edgren will be assisting him with three of them. He appreciated his grandpa holiday vacation time.

Since Ash Wednesday is the fourth Wednesday of February, Jim requested that the next session meeting be February 18. This was unanimously accepted.

Associate Pastor's Report: Vickie requested that Jeff and Melinda Samp be returned to the active rolls. This was unanimously approved by the session. Communion was served on January 24 by request at the prayer vigil. She requested the following days to be away:

  • February 23-27: one day vacation and four service days to the larger church.
  • April 12-17: continuing education to attend conference as media rep for PC(USA)

The Purpose Driven Campaign has 228 (to date) signed up for small groups. There are 30 groups and a request was made for two more leaders. All are welcome at the East Bay Camp Retreat for leaders on February 6 (and 7).

Treasurer's Report: The report will be forthcoming. Year-end work is still being done. Pastor Bell asked session if they prefer a audit review or a full audit this year. It was unanimously decided to have an audit review this year (2003 books) and a full audit next year (2004 books).

Clerk's Report:

  • Approval of minutes of December 17 stated meeting. Carried.
  • Approval of minutes of called congregational meeting January 18 at 9:35 a.m. Carried.
  • Approval of January 25 meeting to accept fifteen new members. Carried.
  • Record of serving of Holy Communion: December 24 and 31.
  • Record of baptisms/marriages: none
  • Changes in rolls: Current Active Membership, January 21: 488; January 28: 506.

Consent Agenda:
Accepted minutes of the following committees:
Christian Education—January 7, Adult Education—December 9, Children's Ministries—January 7, Congregational Life—January 7, Gifts & Memorials—January 27, Health Ministries—December 16, Mission—January 14, Outreach—January 13, Marketing—December 17, Personnel—January 14, Property—January 6, Small Groups—January 21, Stewardship—January 14, Worship—December 1 and January 21, First Peacemakers—January 11, Youth Council—January 11.

Session Agenda:

  1. Request of explanation from Worship committee on speed of plans for a more contemporary service at 11:00 a.m. Mons reported that because of lack of volunteer persons, anticipation of new staff positions, future building challenges and money, the Worship committee decided to move to a slower pace.
  2. Vision Study report was led by Becky Mentzer and Ginny Nappi. With a few adjustments, the session unanimously adopted "OUR CHURCH VISION." The chairs will submit a final copy for the minutes. Steve Barwick requested a formal thank you to these chair persons.
  3. Personnel Report was given by Jay Reece. He presented the job descriptions, compensation and Search Committees for the positions of director of children ministries and director of youth ministries. The two committees are:
    • Director of Children Ministries: Kurt Swearingen (chair), Sandra Mullins, E'Lane Tufts, Cheryl Hoepker, Deb Presley, and Scott McAllister.
    • Director of Youth Ministries: Dave Seyller (chair), Eldon Brewer, Jeremy Brewer, Meghan Rhoades, Bryan Sheppard, Michelle Clemons.
    The session unanimously accepted Jay's report. The job descriptions are on file with the minutes.

Pastor Bell welcomed the new members and said he appreciated all the talents and cooperation involved in the First Presbyterian Session. This coming year will be one of many challenges and he thanked them for their dedication toward positive workings of the church.

Terry Tosh made a motion the meeting be adjourned. This was seconded and unanimously carried. Pastor Bell closed with prayer. The meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
